Ok, my final Bahamut pic for a while (at least until I improve on it!) This is a really nice close up of the costume to see some of the detail (and flaws, but guess thats no surprise!) - plus love the colours against the background and the depth in the shot!

Check out other pics of this costume!

that is incredibly awesome!! Random question --> is it heavy?
Reply
:icondarkerlink:
DarkerLink Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012
Unfortunately yes, quite heavy - I did what I could to keep the weight down (so its mostly foam or cardboard, and the structure of the wings is aluminium which is light and strong) but the sheer scale of it means that its heavy - plus the stilts are wooden so its even heavier to walk in! Shall have to weigh it at some point!

What is it made of?
Reply
:icondarkerlink:
DarkerLink Featured By Owner Aug 28, 2012
The armour is plastazote foam over upholstery foam, the wings are mostly cardboard filled with expanding foam, or foam/cardboard over an aluminium frame, and the digitgrade stilts are wooden

Really like the chest piece. Great paint job and crafting. It almost looks like a leather; is it?
Reply
:icondarkerlink:
DarkerLink Featured By Owner Aug 27, 2012
Nope, the chestplate is plastazote foam built over uphlolstery foam to give it its shape, then coated in latex and painted with acrylics and metallic paint - very proud of that chest plate I have to say!

What does the layer of latex do? And I'm guessing liquid latex, correct?
Reply
:icondarkerlink:
DarkerLink Featured By Owner Aug 28, 2012
The latex is to seal the foam - if you try and just paint foam it gets absorbed into it and thus doesnt have that smooth finish - liquid latex layers on the foam give something for the paint to hold on to and is flexible meaning it wont peel of if you bend the armour slightly

Well played. I'm just spray painting my armour for my Shangeili costume, but the texture looks edged already so it doesn't hurt. I'm trying to use latex to make masks...but with not as much success as I would have thought :/

Thank you :)
It probably wasnt too bad ... maybe Ģ300 all told? and there's a lot of stuff which I can reuse again afterwards if I dismantle the costume... course it did take a hell of a lot of time though!

Lol, list of faults? Well...
a) repairs, pretty battered after the con
b) completely remaking the gold disk, that did not work at all!
c) backs of the wings is a mess, you can see the aluminium structure
d) some places can see the upholstery foam under the body armour, need to stop that
e) build up the upper arm muscles of the costume
f) add in gold bit to front wing (just ran out of time)
g) tempted to take wings apart and put back together, or try and improve them as can see duct tape which is not good!
h) then the fun bits, maybe glowy eyes or making the disk rotate....
